Year 3 and 4 Vikings!!!
Viking Experience
Pupils in Year 3 and 4 travelled back in time to experience the lives of Viking settlers. The children have been learning about Vikings in their latest history topic, culminating in a special theme day where they dressed up in tunics, fur and helmets! They each had their own shield which they had designed in an art lesson the week before. Pupils started with a raid on the local village church, St Nicholas’s in Peopleton, where the children ransacked the altar and pillaged items of gold, silver and bronze. They then set off on foot to ambush some Anglo-Saxon farmers in the woods and put their archery skills to the test. The class made coins and jewellery while listening to Viking music.
The children put the finishing touches to their Viking longboat which featured a large dragon head and red and white striped sail. Eight-year-old Jake said ‘this is the best boat ever’. The excitement didn’t end there, as the ship was set ablaze as part of a ceremonial funeral ritual. A farewell message to the fallen warrior was read aloud and Year 3 pupil, Arthur treated the crowd to his horn! The children watched the ship go up in flames and nine-year-old Camilla exclaimed, ‘that was so cool’.
Class teacher, Miss Tait, said ‘it’s been a fantastic day and the children looked great in their costumes. It was a shame to burn the Viking ship, but it’s a memory we will have for a long time.’ The school have previously set their ship afloat in the swimming pool, so it was nice to do something different.
