Summer Term 2021 – E news 07.05.21

Just as society starts to open up…are we getting complacent. Regular testing
protects us all…

Standards of uniform, manners and general behaviour.

Regular checks will be taking place next week as we feel the above have all slipped
over lockdown for a variety of reasons. We shall be reenforcing our standards over
the next few weeks. My expectation is the full support of parents when it comes to
any order marks, detentions or letters home as we seek to instill in our charges,
basic manners, a community which is inclusive, understanding and friendly to all.

This week’s assembly will seek to enforce the message:
If it is not nice, don’t do it.
If it is not helpful don’t say it

Or as my Form tutor used to say “Be nice or go home!”
Well done and thank you to all the pupils who helped welcome other schools to
Bowbrook this week for our athletics matches. More fixtures next week detailed
below. Remember to make guests feel welcome and to try your hardest in any
school-based activity.

Music resounds around the grounds, children are out on the field and the adventure
playground, forest school is in full swing… things are getting back to nearer
normal…long may it continue. Please see Mrs Izod’s advance notice of the potential
Summer Concert. I am hopeful that Junior sports and speech day and the senior
prizegiving will all take place ‘as normal’ come the end of June/beginning of July.

In other News

News from the Prep School:
On Tuesday of this week all pupils in years 3 – 6 took part in our athletics festival, we
were joined by Abbey Park School and Holy Redeemer. The weather was kind to us
and everybody enjoyed taking part in the various sporting activities. Well done to all.

This week the Prep staff have selected the following Star Pupils:

N/R – Alfie-William Worthington – for being kind and helpful.
I1/2 – Sienna Comens – for super writing of a scene in How to Train Your Dragon
and being a lovely friend.
J3 – Evie Rea for working incredibly hard in all her work.
4SA – Bobby Rush – for working hard in all subjects this week.
4SWn – Charlotte Meikle – for making an amazing bar chart in geography.
5HR – Theo Worth – for a growth in maturity and behaviour.
6SR – Lottie Pennington – Fairchild – for being a great buddy, showing kindness and
lovely manners.

Music News:
Congratulations to Olivia France in S11 this week who performed beautifully as part
of her GCSE music portfolio. Olivia sang ‘On My Own’ from the musical ‘Les
Miserable’ with great expression and sensitivity. Well done Olivia, it was a joy to
listen to. I would also like to praise all of our year 11 GCSE musicians who have
been working hard these past few weeks to produce some exciting composition
ideas towards their portfolio. Well done Year 11!

Congratulations to Evie Rea in J3 this week who has gained 132 marks, a
distinction, for her grade 2 piano internal exam. This is a superb achievement Evie,
well done! Mr Jones would also like to praise Luke Drakeley in J3 for his excellent
attitude and great progress in his guitar lessons. Well done Luke.

Summer Concert:
We are currently planning and rehearsing a reduced summer concert for the 30th
June which will hopefully involve String Group, Jazz Group, Recorder Club, Ukulele
Club, Junior Choir as well as a few soloists. If your child attends one of these
activities, then please save the date in your diary. We will be assessing our audience
capacity nearer the time as government guidance is updated and will keep your
informed. Many thanks

Athletics Events

Junior Athletics
On Tuesday 4th May, Bowbrook hosted the junior Athletics Festival with attendance
from Holy Redeemer and Abbey Park School. All three schools participated in a
variety of track and field events and enabled each pupil to try out a new event. The
afternoon was thoroughly enjoyable and it was so nice to see some competitive
atmosphere around the school again. Every pupil from years 3,4,5 & 6 took part in at
least one event and all pupils received ribbons for their efforts. A thank you to all the
staff who helped out and a big WELL DONE to the pupils of Bowbrook House
School.

Middle Athletics
The Year 7&8 students enjoyed a competitive afternoon taking part in an athletes
fixture against Heathfield School. There were some fantastic performances and all
students took part in a least one track or field event.

The Year 7 girls track team performed well and Hannah Darby came in first in the
300m and 800m. The girls relay team started with Harriet Easton gaining a good
lead, Heidi Styles took the baton well in the second leg, Hannah Darby kept the lead
and Lottie Tutnall fought hard with a great finish to take first place. Lottie also jumped
well in the High Jump and Sofia Merlin came second in the ball throw.

In the Year 7 boys track, team Myles Lynch impressed taking first place in the 100m,
300m and 600m a fantastic effort.

Tom Worth gained a 3rd place in the long jump.

The Year 8 girls track team competed against each other as Heathfield did not field a
team. Matilda Hough came first in the 300m with Molly Neale a close second place.
The Year 8 boys track team impressed in all their events. Luca De Freitas Pires had
a close 100m race but finished well to take first place. Rory Coupland, Tom Grant,
and Alex Mcmillan placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 800m. Guy Valender threw well in
the ball throw and came 2nd.

In all a really good afternoon, with some great results with all the students taking part
and having fun.

Senior Athletics
Unfortunately, due to the bad weather the decision was made to cancel the year 9,
10 and 11 athletics meeting with Heathfield Knoll. Ironically by 2pm the sun was out,
and the grass had dried sufficiently for us to have our own mini athletics afternoon.

All events were catered for, and some good performances were produced. The 4 x
100 relays were very hotly contested with the year 11 boys racing any team that
fancied their chances. Well done to all pupils and thanks to the PE staff for making
the afternoon an enjoyable and productive one.

Next Week’s Fixtures:
We have a busy fixture schedule next week including a number of year groups. We
ask that parents check team sheets carefully for requirements and pick up times. If a
child is unavailable to play they should make sure the teacher in charge is told at
least 24 hours in advance so other arrangements can be made.

We try to give opportunity to as many as possible and the athletics events this week
demonstrate that. However, with restrictions on numbers on minibuses or team size
we cannot always take all willing participants and will choose on the basis of ability
as well as effort and attitude in these cases. Having said that, there will be ample
opportunity for involvement in all cases in games lessons and house events for all to
contribute.

Currently it is VERY important that those travelling away for fixtures from year 7 up
have a face mask (and a sealable plastic bag to store it in) as well as their own water
bottle as we cannot share these. A small hand sanitiser would be good but we will
carry sanitiser, wipes etc and ensure regular use.
