Welcome to Year 6!  We are a class of 19 children with Mrs Mao and supported by Mrs Amess.

We are excited to begin our new history topic next week – World War II and one of the activities set for the home project will be to design and make an Anderson shelter, which will be entered into a national ISA competition. We are planning a trip around our topic this term also – more details will follow in due course. We will be considering our enquiry question – How did lives differ during the war and in what ways did Britain change after WWII?

We will be using our book, Goodnight Mister Tom, in our Literacy lessons. It is a story about a young boy called William Beech, who is evacuated to the countryside at the outbreak of the war. This will inspire us to write letters, create evacuation records and analyse different language structures and new vocabulary. 

Mrs Adamson will teach spellings to our class and will be sending out spellings on Monday to practise at home for the following week.

In Maths we are doing beginnng with units on place value (numbers up to 10,000,000) followed by the four operations: subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. In the second half of the term we will be looking at fractions and converting units. We will also be consoldating times tables and our fluency in Maths.

Science will be taught by Miss Stephenson in our Science lab and their first topic is Light. French will be taught by Mrs Gill, Computing by Mr Bell and Music by Mr Komor. Mrs Adamson will teach the class Religious Education and PSHE.

Years 5 and 6 both have an Oracy lesson on their timetables this year, in line with developments in the English curriculum. This will support the children in both their performance and debating skills and will give opportunities for some collaborative work.
