This Term in Year 1/2: Space & The Great Fire of London!
This term, we are setting off on two exciting learning adventures: exploring the wonders of Space and travelling back to 1666 to learn about the Great Fire of London. These topics will spark imagination, inspire creativity, and help us make rich links across the curriculum.
In History, the children will discover significant individuals who have shaped national and international achievements. They will learn about events beyond living memory, such as the Great Fire of London, and compare life in different periods to understand how things have changed over time.
In Geography, we will use maps, atlases, and globes to identify the UK and its countries, as well as continents and oceans. The children will learn simple compass directions and locational language, and develop their understanding of physical and human features of places.
Our Science lessons will be full of hands-on investigations. We will explore everyday materials and their properties, sort them using Venn diagrams, and test their suitability for different uses. The children will learn about the materials used in an astronaut’s spacesuit and why they are chosen, and they will carry out a fair test to find the best insulating material for an astronaut. We will also compare materials from 1666 with those used today to understand why the Great Fire spread. Year 2 will go further by exploring how the shapes of solid objects can be changed.
In English, we will enjoy exciting lessons based on the books Look Up! and Man on the Moon. The children will write rhyming poems, compare stories, and create information texts about inspiring figures such as Mae Jemison and fictional characters like Rocket. Year 1 will continue learning Phase 5 sounds and tricky words, while Year 2 will focus on Phase 6 spelling patterns and rules.
In Maths, we will cover properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes, addition and subtraction within 100, and multiplication and division using the 2, 5, and 10 times tables. We will also measure and compare length and height using centimetres and metres, and learn to create and interpret pictograms, tally charts, and simple tables. Alongside this, we will continue with our Rainbow Maths challenges to build fluency and confidence.
Other exciting parts of our curriculum include Religious Studies, where we will explore ‘Animal Stories’ and ‘Easter Beginnings’, and PSHE, where we will learn about ‘Growing Up’ and ‘Money Matters’.
We will also enjoy Forest School every Tuesday, PE will take place on Wednesdays with Miss Edwards, and we will have Choir and Music sessions with Mrs Izod later in the week.
