Traffic incident in the village:

Please be aware that a gentleman who walks his dog, at school run times, and who exercises his right to walk on the road rather than the pavement, has had a second ‘near-miss’ with a school parents’ vehicle. Drive slowly and give a very wide birth to ensure the safety of all road users please.

Quiz Night Next Friday:

Parents’ committee quiz night next Friday – all welcome. A ‘not too Serious’ quiz for all ages (but there is a trophy!)

Jeans for Genes:
Thank you for supporting our first charity day of the year and thank you to Year 11 for your
help… a total will follow in due course. Good fun for a worthwhile cause.

From the art room:
This week we have been enjoying the art exhibition displayed in the main hall. I would like
to say a big Thank You, once again, to those who sent their work in. If you get a chance to
look, please call into the hall.
We didn’t launch the challenge as a competition this year and all of the entries will be
awarded a certificate in the coming assemblies. As a staff, we did commend some
outstanding work. These works were made by Olivia in year 4, Jasmine in year 5, Eleanor in
year 7 and Ellen in year 8. Some work has also been entered into the ISA Art Competition.
Well done, everyone!

Return of the weekly maths puzzle!
The return of the famous maths puzzle following a long break due to Covid – entries must
be handed to Miss Brookes or maths teacher by Tuesday 4th October – open to everyone. Can be downloaded here

It has astonishing benefits for children: comfort and reassurance, confidence and
security, relaxation, happiness and fun. Giving a child time and full attention when
reading them a story tells them they matter. It builds self-esteem, vocabulary, feeds

You have all looked wonderful in your jeans today and certainly enjoyed the cake sale at
breaktime. Thank you for your generous donations towards our charity day ‘Jeans for
Genes’.

This week the Prep staff have selected the following ‘Star Pupils’ from their classes:

PE Department News:
U12’s Hockey vs Kingham Hill
Bowbrook U12s travelled to Kingham Hill for an exciting but soggy game of hockey.
Torrential rain was in store as they pushed back against the opposition but spirits
remained high. Bowbrook held the ball well and put the Kingham girls under
pressure.

Kingham took the lead with a fantastic shot on goal but Bowbrook hit back
immediately with an equaliser from Felicity M. Poppy S and Isabella B made some
strong tackles in the middle and Olivia S chased down the play on the wing.

A fast 2nd half saw another goal for both teams before Kingham squeezed in the
winner in the final few minutes. Score: 3-2 to Kingham Hill

U11’s Rugby vs Holy Redeemer

We welcomed Holy Redeemer Primary School to Bowbrook this week for, what
turned out to be, an action packed tag rugby fixture. Holy Redeemer won the toss
and elected to kick off and from the first whistle the Bowbrook boys put pressure on
them. Early in the game we pressured the Holy Redeemer side into touch, took the
free pass, and Bobby scored a fantastic solo try, weaving through defenders, to dot
the ball down with less than 60 seconds down on the clock.

Bowbrook’s lead was short lived as Holy Redeemer, who were quite confident with
moving the ball, scored a quick try in the corner to bring the game back level. As the
first half continued the two teams battled each other with continuous back and forth
tries and with both teams rarely reaching the sixth tag for a turnover. The relentless
speed of a couple of Holy Redeemer players meant that at half time the score was 6
tries to 4 to them.

After a rejuvenating half time talk, and some tactical decision making as a team,
Bowbrook started the second half well, keeping a solid defensive line making lots of
tags. Some great work with the ball from Alfie and Ben kept Bowbrook’s hopes high
but in the end Holy Redeemers speed was ultimately too much for the team. At 7-6,
the fitness of the team told, as Holy Redeemer finished of the match with a quick
flurry of tries to bring the final score to 11 tries to 6 to Holy Redeemer. Bowbrook
were always in the game and often found themselves being tagged, with the final
tag, just as they were approaching the try line. Small fumbles and marginal forward
passes denied them of further tries in the game but the team spirit was high
throughout the game.

U11’s Hockey vs Arnold Lodge

A group of nine U11 girls travelled to the outskirts of Coventry to play their first
competitive game of hockey against Arnold Lodge. The match was played over two
15-minute halves. The girls were apprehensive at first but soon relaxed into the
match. Rosalie W was defending well backed up by Aisha H and Grace C, with no
goalkeepers these positions were vitally important.

Harper H was pushing balls through to Amelie L but couldn’t quite break through the
Arnold Lodge defence. Poppy S, Olivia B and Penny M were working well in midfield
by running into space creating attacking opportunities.

At the start of the second half the girls were at a slight disadvantage as this was a
mixed hockey match with Arnold Lodge fielding 6 boys! The girls battled on doggedly
none the less. Ayla W took a missed timed stick to the face from her team mate
Harper but soon got back into the game.

Unfortunately, the strength of the boys meant that the final result was a loss for
Bowbrook.

The girls played well and took away some lessons for the future. Well done!

U16’s Rugby vs Bedstone
Wednesday this week saw our U16’s team make the long journey to Bedstone
College for their first fixture of the rugby. Bedstone started by kicking the ball to us
and immediately we tried to move the ball to the wing. Not long after the first kick
came the first big moment of the match. Bedstone had possession of the ball and
Bowbrook captain Oli ran across the field and, leading by example, put in a huge
tackle to bundle the Bedstone player into touch.

After practicing lifting in the lineout during training, the team started with a successful
lift, throw and catch, giving the ball cleanly to scrum half Ed who gave a clean pass
for fly half Ailbhe to break line and run in Bowbrook’s first try which he then
converted. 7-0 to Bowbrook.

With a fast and frantic start the Bowbrook boys settled into the game and became
more confident with the ball. Good territorial play from Jack and Eoin saw the team
pin Bedstone down into their own half and it wasn’t long before hooker, Tom, reaped
the benefit of territorial play by gathering a kick and finishing under the posts. This
was shortly followed by a powerful run from Jack in the centres to dot down for
Bowbrooks third try. 19-0 to Bowbrook. Bedstone found their feet and began to move
the ball to get on the outside of the Bowbrook team and they managed to get the ball
over the line in the first half to bring the score to 19-5.

Bedstone’s try celebrations were short lived as Luca came onto the field and
powered himself through the Bedstone team to score a fourth try before half time.
The second half became tougher as Bedstone fought their way back. They scored
two tries quickly after the kick off to bring the score to 26-19. A good drive for the line
from James almost saw Bowbrook pull ahead but Ailbhe delivered the final blow to
Bedstone. With resilience to the hosts they kept fighting but the brave defence of
Bowbrook ultimately kept them out with the final score of 33-24 to Bowbrook.

U13’s Rugby vs Bredon
To round up a week filled with rugby fixtures, the U13’s played their first game
against a well drilled Bredon team. The game started with a long kick off by Will,
immediately putting the Bredon team under pressure with a knock on and scrum to
Bowbrook. The Bowbrook boys set their aim for the game early with quick movement
of the ball to try and get the ball into the wingers hands and move the ball around the
Bredon team.
Bredon were first to strike as their captain and scrumhalf made a break down the
wing and around the Bowbrook team who were desperately chasing back to prevent
this first score. 10 minutes into the match, 15-0 down in points came the first try for
Bowbrook with Bowbrook captain Oli, taking no prisoners, and charging through the
Bredon team. This was then closely followed by Cameron making his first try running
around the Bredon squad to score a great try in the corner.

Halftime, with the score 25-10 to Bredon, the Bowbrook boys came together to
discuss how the second half would go for them. They put this into action with Archie
making a powerful run through the Bredon team, putting them onto the back foot
before having a third try scored by Cameron. Shortly afterwards started to
come the blows for Bowbrook. The team lost Cameron and Oli in quick succession to
injuries and Bredon piled on the pressure. Bowbrook tried to keep in the game with
courageous tackling from Archie, powerful carries from Tapi and expansive play from
Alfie, but the game ran away from the boys. Lots of positives to take from our first game,
and lessons learnt, ready to get stuck into the next opponents for the U13’s.
