Autumn Term newsletter 21.10.2022
Happy Half-Term:
A very damp and miserable end to the half term… I hope that you have had a busy and productive first half to the Autumn Term and that you have tried hard, made progress and enjoyed your schooling. Fixtures, trips and outings, sport, music, art and many, many, learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom… and next half term will be even busier!
I hope all families manage some time together this holiday and please remember that the pupils are back on Thursday 3rd November.
Diary for
Half Term Effort Grades: Years 5 – 11.
Any pupil, regardless of their ‘ability’ can gain maximum effort grades by trying their
hardest in all subjects. We place an emphasis on ‘effort’ because – and many will
have heard me say this – if a pupil is trying their hardest then they will be making the
best progress that they can against their own individual targets:
32 pupils gained 80% As and Bs for effort grades across all their subjects.
17 pupils gained 90% As and Bs across all their effort grades for this half term.
1 pupil got all As for effort in all subjects. Thomas Bowditch. Year 11. Hastings

News from the Prep School:
On a bright autumnal Thursday afternoon, the Prep School pupils walked to
Peopleton church to celebrate Harvest. The children all sang the hymns beautifully
and both the Infant and Junior choir were commended by Rev. Billington for their
contributions. Well done to all of our Prep readers and in particular to our Year 11
Prefects, Tom Bowditch, Jack Pickering, Flynn Little and Maisie Chatterton for
their participation. Thank you to everybody for your generous Harvest donations
which will, I’m sure, be gratefully received by the Maggs Day Centre.
We concluded, what has been a very busy half term, with our Halloween themed
disco. The children have been extremely excited for this and we thank the Parents’
Committee for organising and running this.
I hope everybody has a well earned rest over half term, ready for what is always a
busy and exciting second half of the term.

Music News:
Music Stars of the Week: Well done to all of our Juniors and Infants who all sang
beautifully in Peopleton Church on Thursday as part of their Harvest Service. It is
always such a pleasure to join together to celebrate our Harvest in such a wonderful
setting. Well done to all.
Year 8:
Lottie Pennington-Fairchild and Cameron John in 8MF demonstrated some superb
leadership skills as part of their ‘Stomp Percussion’ ensemble this week; well done
indeed. Syon Ghosh Bhatt also prepared a fantastic suite of ceramic mugs to play as
part of his unconventional percussion ensemble, creating a marvellous timbre. Well
done Syon! I have been very impressed with the creativity of 8MF.
Year 6:
Max Brackenbury took on the role of ‘Bass Guitar’ teacher this week in the J6NS
class band. Max took to the Bass Guitar with ease and then taught his part to others
in the class. Very well done Max; what a superb attitude!
Instrumental:
Please look out for new instrumental timetables which will be going home with
students the first week back after half term. Please could students mark the dates
and times into their planner for each week to ensure attendance, thank you.
Rock Band:
Thank you to those who have returned their Rock Band reply slips this week. Mr
Jones, Mr Bell and I will be discussing who our band members will be and the first
session will take place on Wednesday 9th November. We hope that our musicians
will not be too disheartened if they are not invited to join on this occasion. We will
shuffle around band members again in September so there will always be another
opportunity to join. Keep practising!

U9’s Hockey vs Holy Redeemer:
The mixed U9 hockey team played their first game of the season versus Holy
Redeemer on Monday afternoon at home.
They were all a little nervous but soon got into the game. Leo Maciej-Clarke played
confidently in attack and soon scored the first goal. Jack Jones and Oscar Birch
worked well as a team with some great passing into space both resulting in scoring a
goal each.
With some excellent defence by Will Rush and Harriet Smith Holy Redeemer
struggled to get the ball into the D and could not score.
Final score was 5-0 to Bowbrook House School.
All team players worked hard and deserved the win.
Well played everyone.
U16’s Rugby vs Malvern College:
The first rugby fixture of the week saw the U15’s travel to Malvern College. A strong warm up, with lots of confidence, helped the Bowbrook boys to start with a bang. A very physical
start saw the Bowbrook boys defend in the early stages of the game and both teams traded
blows in efforts to assert dominance on the game.
The first try came from Malvern College, unsuccessfully converted, before captain Ailbhe, leading from the front, went over for Bowbrook’s first try.
After he successfully converted his own try the score was 7-5 to Bowbrook.
As the game progressed both defences were holding strong and refusing to let each
other win the gain line. Malvern wore the defence down to score next, shortly
answered by Jack as he broke the line and finished by touching down in the corner.
An unsuccessful conversion meant the scores at half time was 12-12.
Shortly after half time, Malvern College scored their third try, unsuccessfully
converted to make the score 17-12. This lead was short lived as Bowbrook
capitalised on Malvern’s discipline and took quick tap penalties to catch the Malvern
defence unawares. Luca powered his way through the Malvern defence to dot down
for Bowbrook’s third try. 17-17. Ailbhe took the conversion which seemed to be
bending nicely to get the two before the ball struck the post leaving the game at 17-17. Powerful defending for the final 5 minutes saw the game end with a deserving
draw.
U14’s Rugby vs Tudor Grange:
The U14’s travelled to Worcester on Thursday to play in the Worcestershire schools
cup competition against Tudor Grange. The team arrived with plenty of time and
warmed up well in anticipation of a tough match ahead.
From the first kick off Tudor Grange turned the game into a physical battle. They ran
direct at the Bowbrook boys and forced the team into making a high number of
tackles from the first whistle. The physicality and directness of the Tudor Grange
team took the boys by surprise and quickly the Bowbrook team found themselves
chasing the game. As the game progressed so did the performance of Bowbrook.
Tackling improved as the game continued, with players getting closer to their
opposition and closing them down before they have a chance to get to full speed.
The resilience of the Bowbrook team meant that they didn’t walk away from the
game empty handed. Quick tap penalties from Albert, Charlie and Cameron saw the
team advance up the field before Tom got the ball into his hands and powered over
the try line. Lot’s of positives to take away from the game and we look forward to
putting the lessons learnt in today’s game right in future fixtures. Well done to all the
players who took part in such a physical contest.
Sponsorship opportunity
As we now enter the second half of the autumn term, we are looking at replacing our
senior boys rugby kit, that has served the team well for a good number of years. We
would appreciate any help and support from local businesses, and our local
community, to provide sponsorship and help the school purchase a new set of 20
shirts for the Senior rugby team. These shirts will be used for a minimum of 5 years
and any sponsors will have the opportunity to have their logo’s printed and on
display on the team shirts. These shirts will be on display whenever our rugby team
takes the field, in and around the entirety of the west midlands area. If anyone can
help in anyway then please do get in touch with Mr Swain to discuss further. Thank
you very much.
