Four weeks into the academic year and we appear to be at ‘full flow’ with pupils settling into their new year groups, new pupils settling nicely and the ‘normal’ timetable working well. There are fixtures every day next week. Oliver auditions are in full flow. Music, choirs, orchestra, clubs and activities. It is so nice to see the school so vibrant and the pupil so engaged…Have a good weekend everyone.

Parents’ Committee:

Proposal: Christmas raffle (it was very popular last year) The parents’ committee will contact all of you about this but if you would like to offer to help?

The PC and I are in agreement that we need to get the Parents’ Committee ball rolling so would be grateful if you could add a message in the e news about potential new members and also, more importantly, a chair!

Worcester Foodbank: a foodbank flyer is attached and updated with their current priority items. (Attached) Again if you would like to help with this project then please contact the PC.

Details of our first ‘meeting’ of the year will come out shortly. This could be by Zoom or F2F!

Pupil News: Year 9:

Laura has qualified for the National Schools Equestrian Association championships, in the show jumping discipline. She will be competing on November for a prestigious prize called ‘the Keysoe Plate’.

Molly’s success continues, she won a National dance competition in Telford, on the back of her success at the World Championships, where she was won a bursary and a prize of £100

News from the Prep School

Harvest Festival:
Next Thursday, 7th October the Prep School will be attending Peopleton Church for our Harvest Service. This year we are asking pupils to bring in donations for the Maggs Day Centre in Worcester, which helps to support local homeless people. Can we request that all pupils bring in a donation of either a packet or can of food over the course of next week. No perishable items please.

Due to the size of the church, we unfortunately are unable to invite parents as the Prep School fills the pews, however there will be opportunity for you to join us over the following months at various occasions.

Infants Drop Off:
Can I also politely request that Infant parents drop off pupils from 8.20 am, there isn’t a member of staff on duty before this time for supervision.

Music enews

The music department has been buzzing this week with our Junior and Infant Choirs preparing their pieces for their Harvest Service, year 8 exploring ‘Junk Percussion Rhythms’, year 9 exploring ‘Mood, Atmosphere and Compositional Devices used in Film and TV’ and year 6 practising their instruments to create a class band version of Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’. There really has been some super music making this week.

Despite the heavy downfall on Tuesday, Orchestra managed to arrive to the music room with their stands and their instruments to give an excellent rehearsal ready for our Carol Service; if a bit wet! Thank you Sasha for drying all of our music stands! Jazz Group and String Group have picked up their ensemble skills very well after such a long break. I also hear that Ukulele Club has proven to be very popular so far this term.

Chamber Choir – after much reflection, we have decided to now split Chamber Choir to extend our more able singers in the school and support our younger vocalists more effectively. Junior Chamber Choir will therefore continue to run after school on a Monday from 4-5 in the main hall and a newly established Senior Chamber Choir will begin next week on a Tuesday lunch time in the music room. More details regarding Senior Chamber choir timings and lunch arrangements to be confirmed on Monday. Most students who have been invited to Senior Chamber Choir have attended a meeting this week.

Ukulele Club and Guitar lessons on Friday – Many apologies, Mr Jones has been unable to deliver Ukulele Club and his guitar lessons today. Lessons will be caught up ASAP and we will include an additional Ukulele Club practice this half term.

Oliver – Mrs Heaume, Mrs Mellor, Mrs Ford and I would like to congratulate all students who have auditioned this week for our production of ‘Oliver’. It has been wonderful to see such a buzz and enthusiasm around the school surrounding these auditions. We are looking forward to beginning our discussions next week.

Stars of the Week:

Albert in M8 for conducting and leading his class’ polyrhythmic ensemble, Sasha in S10, Lottie in M8, Tom in M9 and Claudia in M9 for their rapid improvement in Orchestra and of course, all of our students who have auditioned this week for ‘Oliver’.

Mrs Corton would also like to praise Joshua Laws this week in M8 for working so hard towards his Grade 1 piano piece.

Fixture and results
U14 ISA Football

A group of 13 Year 8 and 9 students travelled up the motorway to Dixie Grammar School sports fields to take part in the ISA U14 Midlands Football Tournament.

The format of the day was exactly the same as the U16’s the week prior, 7 games played over 13 minutes with no half time. 3 points for a win, 2 for a score draw, 1 for a no score draw and 0 for a loss.

The boy’s first game was against St Dominic’s who came out all guns blazing. The game was toing and froing for the majority of the 13 minutes with James narrowly missing the net from a well-placed cross from Guy. James again came close with a shot that pinged the crossbar. So many scoring opportunities were narrowly pushed over or to the side of the net until a lovely ball from the corner saw Rory head in a goal in the dying minutes. This left the score-line 1-0 to Bowbrook. A perfect start to the tournament.

The second game against eventual winners Stafford Grammar saw the opposing team take the lead early on from an unfortunate deflection from a Bowbrook player that fell onto the feet of a Stafford striker….1-0 to Stafford. This game was similar to the previous but the boys could not find the back of the net. The game ended 1-0 to Stafford.

The next three games against final 2nd place Twycross House, Priory (dubious offside decision – goal disallowed) and Highclare ended with a no score draw. Theo, Tom and James were putting the opposing teams defence under immense pressure during all 3 games.

Match six against host school Dixie saw a massive swing in the balance of power with Bowbrook commanding the Dixie 18 yard box with 3 goals in quick succession, 1 from Luca, 2nd from Luca E and the 3rd from Theo.

Heading into the final match against Arnold Lodge, Bowbrook had 9 points against Stafford and Twycross’ 12 points….a win was needed and the other 2 to lose for the boys to take the tournament. During a scrappy 13 minutes Luca managed to find the back of the net in the final minute giving Bowbrook the 3 points needed to stay in fight for gold. Unfortunately the final game for both Stafford and Twycross saw them both draw 0-0 giving them the 1 point needed to take the win over Bowbrook’s 12 points. Stafford took the overall on goal difference. If only we had not had that goal disallowed then the boys would have taken the spoils by 1 point!

A lot can be taken away from this tournament and the boys performed exceptionally well and their behaviour was impeccable. An opposing referee commented on how polite the boys were when a handball decision was unseen by him.

U11 Tag Rugby v Holy Redeemer

On Tuesday Holy Redeemer travelled to us for a tag rugby game on a rather wet and windy afternoon! We began with an 8v8 game with our most experienced players against their 8 and it was a close contest indeed. End to end action saw them match us try for try throughout and the end result of the first game was a draw overall.

We then mixed the teams around for a series of training games to make sure everyone was involved in meaningful match time and it was great to see so much development being made and fun being had.

Notable mentions include Captain, Toby, who made some brilliant runs, beating many a player. Luca, whose support play was outstanding and made some good yards. Ben showed good awareness and turn of pace to make a number of excellent runs. Josh defended brilliantly making some excellent try saving tags. Too many good performances to mention them all but well done on a successful game!

U16 Rugby V Tettenhall

The U16 team visited Tettenhall College on Wednesday this week for their second game of rugby in two years and although it was a challenging afternoon, there were some excellent development on display. The first third saw us concede 5 tries through a mixture of some fatigue following the longer than expected coach journey, a disjointed defensive line and 4 very good club players playing for the opposition. Tettenhall were able to create a good platform and then move the ball wide to gain advantage.

Undeterred, we started the second third with more focus. We began to use some string runners like Aaryan and Arya to punch some holes in the defence but also competed much more successfully at the rucks to retain possession. Two tries to our one in this third was a fair reflection of a close contest.

The honours were shared in the final third with 2 tries a piece – we had begun to move the ball away from the contact area much more effectively and found space as a result.

Notable performances from Alfie who stepped in to great effect at scrum half to improve the structure and speed of deliver. Oscar who worked hard and made valuable ground all afternoon. Oli R who made some excellent and positive breaks throughout his stint. Another step along the road to development and understanding and we were proud of their efforts.

U14 Rugby V Bredon

Another convincing win from Bowbrook U14’s who faced Bredon at home. The first half ended at 30 nil. Alex played well at full back often popping up on the wing and supporting well which was rewarded with a couple of good tries for him. Tom’s tackling was immense and he stopped a few dangerous charges. Generally it was a very successful afternoon and we were just too strong for the opposition on this occasion so to even up the odds we drafted in some willing year 8’s who rose to the challenge and performed well in the step up.

Once again too many good individual performances and all deserve praise. The year 8’s involved have a match next week away to Tettenhall College and some of the year 9’s may make the step up to U15 to play away at Bedston in a couple of weeks’ time. The next full test for the U14 team is Tettenhall College just after half term.

U13 Hockey V Arnold Lodge

U16 Hockey v Tettenhall College

A squad of nine girls travelled to Tettenhall College on Wednesday afternoon for 7 aside hockey.

They got off to a flying to start with Holly and Lottie playing strong up front, both scoring in the first 10 minutes. Tettenhall had many opportunities to score but Laura and Alice worked hard in defence to clear the ball.

At half time Bowbrook were leading 4-0. Holly went on to score 3 more goals assisted by great passes in to the D from Alice and Sofia. Lottie made a perfectly timed tackle to stop Tettenhall scoring in the last few seconds of the third quarter.

The last quarter saw Lottie score again and Sofia score from a long ball from Jasmine. All girls played exceptionally well and great result of 9-3 Bowbrook.
