Spring Term Newsletter Friday 28th April 2023
A rather sombre start to my Newsletter this week. On the back of the car crash that killed a former pupil, Jobie Haynes (Leaver of 2013) at Pinvin a few weeks ago we then had the awful news from Chipping Campden Sixth Form which you may have seen on the news.
Four teenagers were involved in a devastating car crash on their way back from school. A total of four air ambulances attended the scene, two of which from the Midland Air Ambulance service.
Unfortunately, three of the sixth formers sadly passed away and one remains stable in hospital. The Air Ambulance was in attendance at both of these incidents.
Some friends/classmates from Chipping Campden School are raising funds for the amazing Midland Air Ambulance service by running a half marathon in October in honour of their friends and their families.

French exchange update:
Our French partners should arrive at 6 o’clock on Monday, 8th May. Please be at school in time to meet / greet them. I will try to update parents via text should they notify me of any late changes or delays. They plan to leave at 8 am on Friday the 12th May.
Could I ask for passports and GHIC cards for those making the return visit to be handed to the school office or Mr Whittingham so that I can check that everything is in order before we leave on the 24th May.
Proposed bowling for French exchange students and partners
Mrs Tocknell is intending to book a bowling evening for exchange students and partners.

Mr Whittingham will send her contact details separately for those who would like to join in. A quick reply would be appreciated as she may be able to get a cheaper rate.
News from the Prep School
We have all settled in very quickly to the new summer term. The pupils have returned looking smart and refreshed. This week our youngest members of the Prep School visited Birdland to see Spike the penguin that we have sponsored, now that he is a national winner!
Congratulations to Alfie Birch and Aisha Haque for being selected to represent Bowbrook in the ISA Handwriting competition for Key Stage 2. Good luck to their entries!
We have heard back form the judges in the Midlands Shakespeare Monologues and unfortunately, we weren’t successful with our Shakespeare monologues. But I was impressed by the pupils’ entries and we will put this one down to experience! Better luck next time.
We had a lovely assembly on Thursday which was taken by N/R and Miss White, we also had an informative talk from Rosalie Wilkinson, Aisha Haque and Dan Turberville – Tully (6SR) about using Palm Oil. This week our Star Pupils are:
N – Max Taylor and Rosie Powell for settling in so well.
R – Jonas Ford for super reading.
I1 – George Peacop for doing a great history project with Grandpa comparing old and new toys.
I2 – Luca Carmine for great fractions work in maths.
J3 – Rupert Sims for settling in well and being a good friend.
J4 – Will Rush for being quietly focused and working independently.
J5 – Maria Parkes for excellent sketches of Ancient Greek columns in Art.
6NS – Penny Mills for showing an improved effort/ focus in her maths lessons.
6SR – Rosalie Wilkinson for preparing and presenting an assembly on Palm Oil.
Congratulations everyone.
We also commended Josh Smith for achieving his Silver Life Saving award.
Next week, on Friday the Prep School will be celebrating the King’s Coronation with a range of activities throughout the day and sharing a picnic lunch with the whole school in the marquee. Prep pupils are invited to come to school wearing Red, White and Blue to mark the occasion.

Music News:
Peripatetic News: Congratulations to James Evans in Year 11 who has passed his Grade 2 violin exam with 114 marks. What a wonderful outcome for a first exam! Thank you to Mr Neville for your support here and well done to James for his dedicated practice and perseverance.
Please note that instrumental lessons have started this week. please let me know if your child has not received their timetable.
Extra-Curricular: Music extra-curricular activities begin next week. Recorders will take place during Wednesday lunch time as well as Junior Samba Club on Thursday at 3.30 in the Music Room. Please look for letters which will be going home with the Juniors inviting them to sign up for the summer term.
Orchestra: Unfortunately, I am unable to run Orchestra next week due to an organized school meeting; many apologies. This will run the week after.
Rock Band: I am also very sorry to share with you that Mr Jones has confirmed that he is no longer able to run Rock Band this term as hoped. I do apologise; he has another personal commitment which he is unable to now move. I am hoping that Rock Band can return again in September.
Lower Chamber Choir: Choir was due to return next week however, we have our bank holiday…and then another bank holiday the week after! I will be looking forward to running choir on Monday 15th May.
Friday Lunch with Mr Mills
Today saw the first instalment of ‘Friday Lunch with Mr Mills’. Seven students from the Middle and Senior School are invited each available Friday to have lunch with Mr Mills. It is a chance to chat to Mr Mills about their school experience and to discuss anything, from what they enjoy, ideas about the school and what could make it even better for them.
This week students from year 8 came. Topics of conversation ranged from school lunches (which were a hit by the way!), lessons, peers and sport. The group of students were excellent and it was a lovely and interesting conversation.
Next Friday is our coronation celebration but Year 9 are invited to the next lunch on 12th May.
PE Department News.
Summer Term
The summer term will, as always, be a very busy term for PE and Games. We have had a fantastic start to the term with athletics events being held (in house and against others) in preparation for the ISA Athletics events that are taking place over the next couple of weeks, as well as starting to get into a cricket mindset, with fixtures fast approaching.
The clubs and activities timetable is now live and many clubs have started this term. Please take the opportunities that are on offer during lunchtimes.
Over the duration of the summer term, in both games afternoons and PE lessons, the kit expectation is the same: White Bowbrook polo tops, Blue shorts for boys and maroon skorts for the girls, white socks and trainers. Students may have the navy hoody with them in case the temperature drops.
As the weather gets increasingly warmer over the summer, it is advisable for students to have their own sun cream to wear and the Bowbrook cap, especially for games afternoons where more time is spent outside.
Specialist equipment for cricket is supplied by the school however an individual box is advisable and if you have your own pads and bat, you are more than welcome to bring them in but, please remember these are students own responsibility.
Also, as the weather gets warmer, the swimming pool will be back open for use. If the opportunity arises to go swimming, please bring in with you a swimming costume and your own towel. You will need ‘sliders’ or flip flops to go to and from the pool area.
Students should check the PE notice board to see if they are involved in fixtures.
